WISDOM OF THE
TREES When I started work on the designs for the Wisdom of the
Trees series I wanted to do more than just produce a set of cards, I
wanted to learn the system called ‘Ogham’ by the ancient Celts.
This was a daunting task as each tree (or shrub), 21 in all,
represented a letter, a number, a period of time- mostly of 28 days-
a lunar month, and also carried a whole realm of stories, myths and
legends which recorded encoded history and knowledge of the uses of
each tree.
A huge amount to learn, so I set about the task
by taking each tree in turn at the time which was allotted and first
I made a “pilgrimage”, a magical journey in search of each tree,
most of which I found growing within a short distance of my home.
The early part of the year was difficult because some of the
trees were impossible to identify in their dormant state with no
leaves to work from, but I persevered and in a short time I was
rapidly building a book in which I recorded my journey, with my
impressions of the spirit of the tree itself, what I learned from
the time spent in meditation with it and drawings from life of
leaves, flowers, fruit, bark and branches.
I studied the
mythology surrounding each tree and wrote that down too, also
medicinal and craftwork uses. I then returned at regular
intervals to build up a complete impression of the seasonal changes.
In time I became friends with particular trees, all of which
have characters of their own, just like all living things!
At the end of the year I had all the reference I needed to
start the designs, which turned out to be a most enjoyable task and
as I now knew the trees so well it was easy to visualize what each
card should look like, as each tree suggested both the content of
the imagery and the colour scheme which is so important in
portraying its essence.
I hope you enjoy these designs, I
certainly enjoyed making them, and have gained a tremendous insight
into what is a fascinating subject, although the more you learn(as
in all things) the more you discover there is still to learn- but
isn’t that the most wonderful thing about this
life?
